Stepless adjustability. Without joints.
The THPG glass tube lamp.
This lamp was designed by the German industrial designer Frank Person. His goal was to direct and control light without the technical complications of joints. And indeed, the tube (made of borosilicate glass) can be rotated around the support rod in a full circle and can be fixed vertically in a stepless and non-slip manner using two strong neodymium magnets. The light is directed by a rotatable shade (available in brass or leather), which dampens and directs the light with a 60° cutout. This allows you to achieve lighting effects such as the famous cobbler’s balls with their refraction of light through water.
Components and Design – Made in Germany.
The few components are solidly crafted: the tube was fused together by a glassblower in southern Germany from two Schott glass tubes, which are commonly used in laboratories; the rod and base are made of burnished steel, and the shade is available in either pit-tanned leather or 2 mm thick raw brass. The textile cable from the Vogtland region supplies a Bakelite socket (E14) with power.
The rod and base are burnished by hand, which can result in a slightly heterogeneous surface. The base is also made of European rolled steel, whose heavy industrial history can shine through in the form of suction cup marks or coolant residues – making each piece unique.
