Wire baskets from the Harz Mountains. Unique in Germany.
Some things are so good that they disappear from the market. This may sound paradoxical, but it is easy to explain in economic terms: If a product lasts practically indefinitely, it never needs to be replaced and soon becomes unsaleable. It is one of the daily afflictions of our business to repeatedly come across items of outstanding quality that have suffered this fate. The wire baskets made by Ernst Dippe and Son from Quedlinburg in the Harz Mountains are one of them. At the end of the year, the small family business will cease production after almost 120 years. We were able to secure at least some of the remaining stock - in the hope of reaching some of the households where such a basket, which was once widely used, is not yet in use. Dippe und Sohn is the only company in Germany that still manufactures so-called potato baskets, which were developed at the beginning of the 20th century for use in agriculture for potato harvesting, from old galvanized wire. The production process has never changed: Wires are woven into wire mats on looms designed and built by the founding generation themselves, which are then pressed into round or oval shapes. The rest is manual work. You will certainly only have to buy a basket like this once, but it is so versatile that it is worth considering having several of them in the house (or shed) - they are certainly stackable.
