As Western Europeans, we have almost resigned ourselves to the fact that simple everyday objects are shipped halfway around the globe to do their dreary duty for a short time before they fall apart and the cycle begins anew. This makes it all the more pleasing to discover everyday helpers from local production. Our coat hangers are made from beech wood by a family business in the northwest of Germany between Hanover and Bielefeld. In addition to the visual and tactile pleasure they inevitably evoke when used, they are also acoustically superior to their metal and plastic competitors. This is because the sounds they produce with and against each other are much more pleasant to the human ear than the rattling discordant sounds of their counterparts.
